Album Overview
I can’t think of any other way to start this review other than saying, “Wow!!” Why am I in shock? Teddy P. released his album Word & Deed for $1 if you purchase it digitally... and no, that’s not a typo! You get a 16 track album featuring Eddie Nigma, Rhema Soul, Braille, Nina del, Wonder Brown, Young Joshua, Phien-X Zekarayah, E-K-O, Conviction, Stephen Brindle, Average Joe, B. Morr and Ackdavis just for $1 dollar!
I know at least one person that’s reading this will be thinking that if it’s only one dollar, the quality must not be that good because there are a lot of artists that sell mixtapes for one dollar who rap over secular beats with no mixing. Word & Deed has original beats produced by Teddy P. (a few co-produced by others) that are sure to get you nodding your head, focused on the message, in a worship mood, or even in a meditation mindset. The whole album has an underground hip-hop feel which was different for me because I am used to the southern banger type of songs. So I must admit after a couple of listens to the album, I really didn’t hear anything that caught my attention. But now I can’t even see how that was the case! The album starts off with kind of a smooth, slow tempo feel to it, and then gradually starts to pick up in tempo until the last couple of tracks. I encourage you to just check it out for yourself! If, like me, you don’t hear anything that grabs your attention at first, then give it a couple more spins!
Teddy P. is known for his production talents but on Word & Deed he gives us a taste of his lyrical and vocal skills on songs like “Grace” ft. Nina Del, and “Where Would I Be?” ft. Young Joshua and Conviction. All of the features make Word & Deed a lyrically diverse album. Since there are so many different styles, it’s nearly impossible to box Word & Deed into one category. But the most important quality is the substantial biblical truth which is present throughout the whole album! I don’t think anyone who is a fan of Christian Hip-Hop would be disappointed with the lyrical quality on this project, especially for the cost of only $1! Each artists lyrical styled graced the tracks that Teddy P produced. There were no songs on the album that sounded out of place which is a big plus when you have so many artist featured on one album. It is evident that plenty of thought and quality time went on Word & Deed.
Spiritual Significance
The album title Word & Deed is based on Colossians 3:17 which says, “Whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks through Him to God the Father.” That means bringing honor to Christ in every aspect and activity of daily living. As Christians we represent Christ at all times, so we need to make sure we lift Christ up to the fullest in our actions and in our speech. The song “Word & Deed” ft. Believen Stephen and Average Joe kind of reminded me of the 13 Letters album from the 116 Clique because it’s based on the whole chapter of Colossians 3. If you haven’t heard 13 Letters you should most definitely check it out. It’s a must have! Ok back to the review. This song caught my attention because I love it when artists take specific scriptures out of the word and turn them into rhymes. Although it shouldn’t take the place of reading your Bible, memorizing these kinds of rhymes is a good way to memorize bible verses, which helps to meditate on the word (Joshua 1:8) and to let the word of Christ dwell in you richly (Colossians 3:16).
The overall topic of the album is to do everything in the name of Jesus, but there are many sub-topics throughout Word & Deed such as the grace of God in the song “Grace” ft. Nina del (Titus 3:7; Ephesians 2:8), God giving us what we lack in “The Giver” ft. Rhema Soul (Genesis 22:14; Matthew 6:33), being set free from sin in “Set Free” ft. B. Morr (Galatians 5:1; Romans 6:6,7), and many more. Go check it out, it’s definitely worth way more than a dollar!
